Frequently Asked Questions

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent Makeup, or micropigmentation, is a procedure that carefully implants colored pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. I perform this procedure with a double coil tattoo machine, the same instrument used by traditional tattoo artists. It is interesting to note that the art is believed to date back to ancient Egypt where permanent eyeliner was tattooed on both men and women.

Who can benefit from Permanent Cosmetics?

Almost anyone can benefit from this procedure. Permanent Makeup is perfect for the active or busy person who has little time to apply makeup; for the athlete who wants to look great before, during and after workouts; and for those wanting to look their best all the time. Permanent makeup is the solution for those allergic to conventional cosmetics or those who have poor eyesight and medical conditions such as tremors or alopecia. Women and men from young to old can enjoy the benefits of permanent makeup.

Does the procedure hurt?

Pain depends on each individual's threshold. To minimize discomfort, clients are provided with a topical anesthetic to numb the procedure area. Most people experience some degree of redness or swelling following the procedure but are able to resume their normal activities immediately afterward. If cared for properly, permanent makeup can last a lifetime; however, some people will experience a gradual fading over time and may require a touch-up in order to maintain the color and vibrancy.

Is it safe?

At Artistic Beauty Permanent Makeup Clinic, I only use pigments that are FDA approved and formulated for the face. Also, individual, disposable, sterile needles and gloves are used for each procedure. While allergic reactions to permanent cosmetic pigments are extremely rare, a patch test may be requested. Please note that existing body art counts as a patch test.

How long does each procedure take?

Allowing time for anesthetics to take effect, the average time for the initial visit is approximately 1 to 2 hours.

How many appointments will be necessary?

Most patients can tolerate several cosmetic procedures in one visit. If the client has existing scar tissue from trauma or fever blisters in the area of the procedure, a brief touch-up visit may be requested four to six weeks after the initial application. Full disclosure of pre-existing medical issues before the procedure and strict adherence to after care instructions will generally lead to satisfactory results in one visit.

What if I want to change the color?

After permanent makeup is applied, it is possible to repeat the procedure with a darker, not lighter color. Once the procedure area has fully healed, traditional makeup can be applied directly over the Permanent Makeup to enhance or create a more dramatic look.

Is Permanent Makeup permanent?

If the aftercare instructions are followed and appropriate precautions taken, than permanent make-up can last a lifetime. That said, a variety of factors influence the longevity of Permanent Cosmetics. Ultra-violet exposure from sun or tanning booths, certain drugs and excessively dry skin are all factors that may affect the longevity of permanent cosmetics. Microdermabrasion, laser, Alpha-hydroxy, Retin-A, and glycolic acid must be kept away from treated areas. These chemicals or procedures slough away top layers of the skin and eventually the dermal layer where the pigment resides. Proper protection of the tattoo such as wearing sunblock on eyebrows, sunglasses for eyeliner and SPF lip balm on lips will greatly prolong the effective life of these procedures.

Other items of interest:

During the first few days following the procedure, colors will appear darker but will gradually lighten to the chosen shade in the weeks following the procedure. Pigment colors can look either soft and natural or vibrant and dramatic. Permanent Makeup should not be considered a total Makeup replacement. As we age and styles change, it is best to subtly enhance your features so that you always look your best. If a dramatic look is desired, regular cosmetics can always be applied over your permanent Makeup.
